A Weird and Unlikely Beginning
By the time the pizza had gotten there Alex and Dylan had finished making “Cupcake Cones” for the dessert. They went to the backyard to eat.
“Dylan,” Alex called. “Would you please get my backpack?” As he went she thanked him.
“You’re actually gonna do your homework?” Macalla asked.
“Probably not,” Alex replied. “I only have French and English. But, my laptop’s in my backpack.” Suddenly, a football came towards them out of nowhere. “Watch out!” Alex called as she caught it right before it hit Liam right in the face. “LUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
“Sorry, Alex.” A boy around the girls’ age called as he jumped the fence. “It kinda slipped.”
“I’m not the one you should be apologizing to.” Alex replied.
“Who’d I almost hit this time?” ‘Luke’ asked.
“Liam.” Louis said.
“One Direction?” he like Dylan turned to Alex.
She just said, “Our parents”
“Ok,” Luke looked as if he understood what she meant by that. “I’m sorry for almost hitting you in the face with a football, Liam.”
“That’s alright.” Liam replied.
“Here Alex,” Dylan threw her backpack to her.
“No!” Alex jumped up and caught it before it hit the ground. She gave Dylan a nasty glare as she opened one of the pockets, took out a letter and put her backpack down. As she read it her eyes widened, Liam was the only one to notice. “Dylan, come over here.” When he was next to her she pinched him.
“Ow,” he screamed. “Why’d you do that?”
“To see if I was dreaming.” She answered a bit excitedly.
He rolled his eyes, “Why?” She just turned back to the letter.
“AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!” she screamed and everyone looked at her, worried. She gave Dylan a huge hug.
“What happened?” he asked.
“WE MADE THE FINALS!” she replied to him as he took the letter from her hands. Once he read it he lifted her up and spun her around.
“Sorry to interrupt your celebration,” Natasha said. “But, what happened?”
“Finals….” Luke started. “Imma guess that the dance team’s got a shot at bringing home the gold.”
Alex just nodded; she was on the ground again. “In 2 weeks.”
“Well,” Zena started. “I for one am not surprised.” Everyone turned to her. “You guys make a good team.”
“Only, because we’re best friends.” Alex replied.
“Still,” Natasha continued. “You guys are always together.”
“What are you hinting at here?” Dylan asked as they sat back down, Luke joining them.
“Nothing,” Rachel said. “Just that if you guys started going out; nobody would be surprised.”
Alex narrowed her eyes at them “First of all, eww, gross.” She shuddered, “Second of all, I don’t plan on dying anytime soon.”
“I have to agree with Alex there.” Dylan added. “If we were to go out most of the guys at school would kill me.”
“And most of the girls me.” Alex continued. “Besides, do you even know part of the reason he even tried to become friends with me?” The girls shook their heads. “When I found out I felt VERY used.”
“Why, what happened?” Luke asked, interested in the conversation.
“He had a crush,” Alex looked at Dylan while she said this. “On one of my friends at the time.”
“Now, that’s just low. Even for you Dylan” Macalla said. Alex just raised her eyebrows in agreement.
“So,” Dylan said, changing the topic. “What song should we pick?”
“I don’t know.” Alex replied. “That’s the hardest and most crucial part of the process. Not to mention that we need a back-up.” She laid her head on Rachel’s lap and lay down.
“You do realize you need 3 performances, right?” Luke asked.
“WHAT?” Alex yelled out. “Aw, man!” she groaned. “Can we please talk about something else? I don’t wanna think of this right now.”
“How was your Music test?” Zena asked.
Alex groaned. “She messed up on the whole last bar.” Luke answered for her. “And the rests, and the speed.”
Alex punched him. “I think they get it.”
“Sorry,” he said rubbing his arm.
“Isn’t your playing exam in like 3 weeks?” Dylan asked.
“Two, actually.” Alex corrected him. “With piano accompaniment, so I’ll probably end up being WAY off tempo. And to top it off we have a written exam as well. At least the notes are pretty easy.”
“At least one of us thinks so.” Luke said.
“This is way too depressing! Talk about something else!” Alex shouted out. “I don’t wanna think of school right now.”
“What do you play?” Niall asked.
“Flute,” Alex replied.
“Well, for class anyway.” Dylan added. “She can play way more.” There was a beep. Alex took out her phone and read a text.
“Who is it?” Macalla asked.
“Aaron,” she answered.
“Guys,” Another boy who looked a few years older than the girls jumped the fence. “Have you seen my lizard?”
Alex went pale. “You mean you lost him?” she had a hint of fear in her voice. “I swear if you don’t do something about him I’ll make Dylan give him back to the pet shop.”
“Fears of Alex: lizards, spiders, and most bugs.” Dylan said a loud. “And she’s claustrophobic.”
“Jake!” a voice from the other side of the fence came. “Get your lizard out of my room!”
“Looks like your mom found him.” Zena stated. Alex let out a sigh of relief.
